What are Milia?

Milia are small, dome-shaped bumps that are typically white or yellow. They most commonly appear on the face but can also appear on other parts of the body.

They are not painful or itchy and typically only result in cosmetic concerns, usually going away on their own after a few weeks.

Symptoms of Milia

Milia are small, harmless cysts, and typically present as follows:

  • Small, bump-like cysts on the skin
  • Usually located on the face, especially around the eyes, cheeks, and nose
  • May also appear on other parts of the body

What Causes Milia?

Milia is caused when skin cells or keratin becomes trapped beneath the surface of the skin. It is often linked to skin damage such as burns, blisters, or prolonged sun exposure, and also the use of certain topical medications.

It can also be formed due to blockages in the sweat glands, and is therefore common in newborns whose sweat glands are not yet fully developed.

Complications and Risks if Left Untreated

Milia are typically harmless and will usually go away without treatment, however, they can persist if not properly managed and can cause discomfort if they become numerous or enlarge.

Milia Diagnosis

Advice should be sought from a dermatologist if you are experiencing discomfort or notice changes, or if you are concerned about Milia development.

Milia diagnosis is typically done through a simple visual examination, with no invasive tests being required, however, as part of a consultation at RENA Clinics, we would undertake a full skin test and medical examination to allow us to rule out any other issues and advise on the most appropriate way of managing and treating your condition.

We understand the concerns and issues people face when dealing with milia and offer safe and effective solutions to help you achieve the appearance you desire. If you are considering treatment for milia or just want to understand your condition better, our team will thoroughly assess your individual situation, discuss the available options, and guide you towards the best treatment plan to address your unique needs and concerns.

Milia Treatment Options

Milia often resolve on their own without treatment, however, can be managed by avoiding heavy creams or oil-based products, and ensuring you use sunscreen to prevent skin damage.

For persistent milia, treatment options include cryotherapy, topical retinoids, or de-roofing using a sterile needle to pick out the contents of the milia.

Throughout your treatment journey, our team will closely monitor your progress, making adjustments as needed to ensure the best possible outcome. Our goal is to help you achieve clear, healthy skin and restore your confidence.
