What is Hair Loss?

Hair loss, or alopecia, is a condition characterised by the partial or complete loss of hair from areas of the body where it normally grows, particularly the scalp. It can manifest in various forms, affecting both men and women, and can range from mild thinning to complete baldness. Hair loss can be a result of genetic predisposition, hormonal changes, medical conditions, or other factors.

Symptoms of Hair Loss

The symptoms of hair loss can vary depending on the underlying cause, but typically include gradual thinning on the top of the head, patchy bald spots, sudden loosening of the hair, or full-body hair loss. Men often experience a receding hairline and baldness on the crown, while women may notice thinning hair, particularly on the top of the scalp. In cases like alopecia areata, round, smooth bald patches may develop on the scalp or other parts of the body.

What Causes Hair Loss?

Hair loss can be attributed to several factors:

  • Male Pattern Hair Loss: This is the most common type of hair loss in men, characterised by a receding hairline and baldness on the top and front of the head, often due to genetics and hormonal changes.
  • Female Pattern Hair Loss: This type affects women, leading to thinning hair, particularly on the top of the scalp. It is often related to hormonal changes and genetics.
  • Alopecia Areata: An autoimmune condition that causes hair to fall out in round patches. It can sometimes progress to complete baldness of the scalp or even the entire body.
  • Other Causes: Inflammation of the scalp due to infections, skin disorders, or other conditions can also lead to hair loss. Scarring alopecia, where the hair follicles are destroyed and replaced by scar tissue, can result in permanent hair loss.

Complications and Risks if Left Untreated

Permanent hair loss can arise due to genetics, or also if certain scalp conditions remain untreated. Hair loss is not usually anything to worry about from a medical point of view, with the main concern being the phycological distress and impact on self-esteem that hair loss can have. However, it is also important to obtain proper and accurate diagnosis to ensure that hair loss is not indicative of another underlying medical condition.

Hair Loss Prevention and Management

Preventing hair loss involves addressing the underlying causes where possible. This may include protecting the scalp from sun damage, avoiding harsh hair treatments, managing stress, and maintaining a healthy diet. Early intervention is key, as it can slow or halt the progression of hair loss.

Hair Loss Diagnosis

Diagnosing hair loss typically involves a detailed medical history and a physical examination of the scalp. In some cases, blood tests may be conducted to rule out underlying conditions such as thyroid issues or nutritional deficiencies. A skin biopsy might be performed if scarring alopecia is suspected, helping to determine the exact cause of hair loss and guide treatment options.

Hair Loss Treatment Options

At RENA, we offer a wide range of treatments tailored to the specific type and cause of hair loss. Treatment options may include topical treatments to stimulate inactive hair follicles, or oral systemics where these topical treatments have proved ineffective. We can also offer Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy, a cutting edge treatment that involves injecting concentrated platelets from the blood into the scalp.

These treatments, when combined with specialised hair care and supplements, can provide a comprehensive approach to managing hair loss and promoting healthy hair growth. At RENA, each treatment plan is customised to meet the unique needs of our patients, ensuring the best possible outcomes.
