What Is Dermal Filler Dissolving?

Dermal Fillers are a non-surgical treatment designed to restore volume and lift sagging skin in areas such as the lips, nose, and jawline.

These fillers can be applied to both the face and body, and many individuals prefer them over surgery due to their non-permanent nature. This allows for flexibility if preferences change over time or in the event of any complications.

Dissolving Dermal Fillers is possible and typically involves an enzyme called Hyaluronidase. This enzyme is injected into the areas with unwanted filler, effectively breaking down the Hyaluronic Acid and returning the area to its original appearance.

What Results Can I Expect?

Dermal filler naturally breaks down in the body over a period of 18 months. To maintain the desired results, it is important to schedule follow-up appointments for touch-up treatments, however, if it desired to reverse the results then dermal filler dissolving can be undertaken.

Filler dissolving is a treatment process using an enzyme called Hyaluronidase. This enzyme naturally occurs but can be injected to dissolve a hyaluronic acid dermal filler. If Hyalase is injected to dissolve filler in any area, it typically takes effect within 24 hours. You will notice a decrease in volume, and the natural shape of the treated area will begin to return within a few days following the injection of the dissolver.

Hyaluronidase can either be injected into the tissues or sometimes given topically, being rubbed onto the skin using preparations such as Topilase.

It may take up to two weeks for the full effects to be visible and if the desired outcome is not achieved then further treatment may be necessary.

Whilst lip filler dissolving is the most common procedure, our highly skilled consultants are equipped to manage other areas as well.

Our approach to filler dissolution is conservative and patient-centred. In cases where a significant volume of filler needs to be reversed, you may require 2-3 treatments to ensure the process is safe and effective.

Why Might Filler Need To Be Dissolved?

Patients often seek cosmetic clinics for filler treatments to address various aesthetic concerns, but it is important to be aware that complications can arise, especially if a patient has sought help from a less qualified practitioner than the Dermatologists here at RENA Clinics.

Fillers can lead to a range of issues, and whilst filler reversal is typically effective in addressing these complications, it may not always provide a complete solution.

In our clinic, we frequently encounter patients who require dissolving treatments for the following common complications:

  • Swelling
  • Overfilling and facial distortion
  • Filler migration
  • Discolouration (Tyndall effect)
  • Contour irregularities
  • Infected filler

This treatment offers a swift and often highly effective solution for various complications. Dissolving filler can effectively eliminate unwanted lumps and bumps, dissolve overfilled dermal fillers for improved symmetry and alignment, and help restore a natural appearance

What Does The Procedure Involve?

The injection process is swift, typically lasting only a few minutes, and can often be performed on the same day as your consultation when appropriate. We may apply a numbing cream to the area beforehand if you are sensitive to the injection sensation. Once the area is sufficiently numbed, the dissolving enzyme is injected to break down the filler, followed by a gentle massage to ensure even distribution of the product.

While the injection itself takes just a few minutes, the entire procedure, including preparation, may take up to 30 minutes. After your treatment, your doctor will apply an aftercare cream and provide guidance on how to care for the treated area effectively.

For optimal results, we recommend avoiding blood-thinning medications for three days prior to your treatment. Additionally, it is advisable to refrain from alcohol for 24 hours before your appointment. We advise you to avoid touching the treated areas for 6 hours to prevent infection and refrain from wearing makeup for 6 to 8 hours on the affected area. We also advise avoiding intensive exercise for the next 48 hours and any extreme temperatures such as hot and cold (steam rooms, sunbeds or saunas) for 7 days.
